4 Wheeling With Matt

Back in November, Matt and I were two of the first people along the front range to order the best vehicle Jeep has made since 1973 - the Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. It's got all of the tough underpinnings of an older Jeep vehicle (pre-1975), but it's a bit longer than a standard Wranger, giving passengers a little more room and providing adequate space for camping gear. They arrived in December, and we spent the rest of winter eagerly awaiting an opportunity to take the tops off and head out into the mountains.

Matt and I were supposed to head down to Creede in June to ride some jeep trails and test our new rides, but because of busy schedules and the amount of snow in the San Juans we instead opted to go closer to home. There are some pretty good trails west and northwest of Boulder, which is where headed.

The photos you see here are from the Switzerland trail with the exception of the one with the Jeep in full convertible mode (minus doors and windshield) which was taken on a trail just north of the Middle St. Vrain Creek. We camped on the creek that night, enduring a bit of rain the next morning.

We found lots of interesting trails including one that led to a fairly well organized obstacle course with steep inclines and declines, stream crossings, and much more. It was perfect for testing out the Rubicon's capabilities, and we were very pleased (amazed, really) with it's performance.

We're now going to shoot for a trip to Creede in late August, where we'll hopefully do an extended four wheeling trip with camping involved.
