Pictures from Creede... No, How About Hawaii Instead
I should be in Creede right now but a cold and a major snowstorm kept Sunday and me away. We were going to head down there for a long weekend to visit with Dennis, Jimmy, and Joe who were on a two week elk hunting trip. Last I heard Joe bagged an elk, so maybe we'll have elk burgers at the family reunion next year. Congratulations Joe!
We also wanted to check in on the progress of our house that's under construction down there, but that will have to wait. When we finally do get down there we'll take some pictures to share. In the meantime, here's a picture of the foundation that my dad took a couple of weeks ago:

In lieu of more pictures from Creede, I'm posting pictures from another event in 2006 that is long over due for me to be telling you about: our trip to Hawaii in March 2006 with the Kurtzes. Katie and Jack had their 40th wedding anniversary back in June and Creede, Sunday, and I chipped in to take Katie and Jack on the dream tour of the Happiest Place on Earth (it ain't Stillwater, Creede). We went to Maui and Hawaii (the Big Island). Before you dive into the pictures, here are our top 10 memories of the trip, in no particular order:
1. When Jack anointed Katie the "Great Wahine" (wah-he-nay), which means the "Great Woman" in Hawaiian but sounds more like "Island Queen", which was surely his interpretation of it. The name stuck - we pretty much called Katie the Great Wahine for the whole two weeks.
2. When we inadvertently went whale watching in a glass bottom boat from Kona Village and saw not one but two humpback whales jump straight up out of the water, spin, and land on their backs in the ocean. It was the kind of thing you see on the Discovery Channel, and we were very close to it. We got lucky according to our boat captain, who said that while it wasn't uncommon to see whales that time of year, it was uncommon to see two whales jump like that. We also got to listen to them sing via an underwater microphone.
3. Visiting the banyan tree grove in Lahaina. It's literally one square city block occupied by the same tree, which has multiple trunks. It's one of the coolest looking trees in the world.
4. Having cheeseburgers and lava flows at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina, and then touring all the great art galleries there for an afternoon.
5. Celebrating a joint anniversary dinner at David Paul's in Lahaina. David Paul's is an utterly decadent experience - one of the best restaurants I've eaten at anywhere.
6. Jack seeing a German guy take his pants completely off to go to the urinal at the Volcano House in Volcano, Hawaii. Jack said he'd seen something he'd "never seen before". And he wasn't talking about the smoldering volcano in the distance.
7. Walking through the rain forest on our way to see a lava tube and seeing all the beautiful flowers, trees, and birds. And true to it's name it rained, and rained, and rained some more.
8. Eating sweet bread at the Punalu`u Bake Shop in the quiet town of Na`alehu the southernmost place in the United States (no, it's not actually Key West).
9. Pretty much all of our stay at Kona Village, but especially walking the beach along the bay and seeing sea turtles laying on the sand and an eel being fed ahi tuna in a tide pool. Watching an eel eat gives you a sense of how ancient they seem. Also, smoking a cigar with Jack at the Bora Bora Bar, snorkeling with Katie, ocean kayaking, and eating way too much while we were there.
10. The nighttime flight back from the Big Island to Maui on a bona fide puddle jumper - a one engine plane that the four of us, two Hawaiian mechanics, and our 18 year old pilot could barely fit into. After spending 45 minutes wondering if I was going to die in the unforgiving waters of the Pacific ocean, while watching Sunday have a panic attack, Katie turn giddy, and Jack get the rest of his fear of flying behind him, we landed safely at the Maui airport and sadly headed for home.
One final thing to mention - I'm trying out a new feature on my blog. You'll notice a new section on the side of the page where I'm sharing articles on the web that I've found interesting. It will be updated almost daily. This is a really neat feature that Google Reader now supports. I'm fast becoming a fan of Google Reader. It's easy to use and is a really efficient way to stay on top of lots of various things on the web. It's yet another reason to go get a Google account, in my opinion. Anyway, I hope you find the new feature interesting.
